7th October 1763: The Royal Proclamation of 1763 issued by King George III

The victory of the Anglo-Prussian coalition in the Seven Years’ War led to the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763. While this had a global impact, it also heralded a dramatic change to territory in North America where France recognized the sovereignty of Britain over Canada and gave them a large area of eastern Louisiana that stretched from the Mississippi River to the Appalachian Mountains.

Having broadly allied themselves with the French during the war, many native tribes in North America were negative towards British rule. Many joined together under the leadership of Ottawa Chief Pontiac in an uprising that sought to drive the British out of the region. Meanwhile existing French settlers who now found themselves under British rule resented the new colonialists. In response King George III issued a Royal Proclamation in the hope of reducing tensions.

The proclamation was the first piece of legislation that applied to all 13 colonies, which had previously been reasonably autonomous, and forbade westward expansion beyond the Appalachian Divide by establishing the area as a British-administered Indian reservation. It also recognised the concept of Native American land titles by prohibiting settlers from buying tribal territory unless it had first been bought by the Crown.

The proclamation upset existing British colonists who wished to continue westward expansion, including future President George Washington. Ignoring the law, many settlers nevertheless made the journey beyond the Appalachian Divide, and by 1768 the government had already begun to move the boundary line further west.
